Why Life with Twins and Multiples??

We just received out first nasty comment. *giggle*

No biggie...but since our negative Nancy had to comment, I guess I will clear up her question.

She asked and I quote:

So I just have to ask, why do you call your blog, "Life with Twins and Multiples"? Twins ARE multiples; whenever I hear someone mention "twins and multiples," to be honest it sounds like they don't know what they're talking about and think that "multiples" refers to triplets and higher.

Well that is an EASY question to answer!! This blog is written by several Moms.

Some of the Moms have Twins, some have Triplets, some have Quads. Not all have written yet, some are new, some have been with us for a while. Most of the posts are written by myself, a Twin Mom. However if this blog was solely written by me, I would not call it Life with Twins and Multiples. I'd come up with some other fancy schmancy name that recolved around my own Twins names most likely.

Since this blog is not all about my Twins and not all about Twins, I named it Life with Twins and Multiples, explaining that this blog is about Mothers and their lives with their Twins....or in some cases if the author has Triplets or Higher......Multiples.
Kind of almost a hybrid of a title in a way.

IN most cases, with the Mothers of Multiples that I know.....Triplets or higher order multiples are referered to as Multiples and usually Twins are just, well... Twins.
This is just how it is in my circle of Mom of Multiples friends.

anyhow thanks for asking, Nancy. :)

Some of our readers agree.....

I agree as a mom of Twins, I see moms with "Multiples" to be moms who had trips, quads, etc. whether it's the correct term or not it's like slang in the "multiples" world. In fact nurses in the NICU used it the same way as well. Not to mention can be used to describe a mom with SETS of twins. I thought all moms of multiples knew that? ;)

I've written a couple of times (one of my resolutions is to try to write more now that my kids are older!) but I also don't think of my twins as 'multiples', I've always associated that with trips and up. Technically I know that isn't correct, but "Twins and Multiples" takes up a lot less space and rolls off the tongue much easier than the title "Twins and HIGHER ORDER Multiples". :-)

Rad Crop Circles in my neighbors yard

While on a choo choo wagon walk today,

I noticed the neighbors yard looking rather peculiar.

It appears that the neighbors have a rainbow-esque crop circle (or more like half circle) in their yard! I realize this was not an alien invasion but it looks pretty funny!!

In the pic you can see what the recent

freezes have done to many Central Florida yards.

Do you ever think about the comments

Sometimes the comments people make in public when they discover that you have multiples.... are pretty hardcore.

I really wonder about people sometimes, like what is really in their head? I have heard many atrocious comments and have read many online that were said to others. Some of them make you think that the people making the comments, either hate children or maybe have some jealousy issues.

I think many of us have heard the few common ones like:

Better you than me
Wow, I am glad I don't have twins
OH my word are they (insert amount of multiples you have here)
how do you do it
how do you handle them
you have your hands full

But what about the REALLY intense comments. Those are what disturbs me.
Recently I have read several blogs that all stated one common thing that was said to them at least once.

I'd kill myself if I had twins

WOAH, what the heck is that??? Seriously? People go around saying this to random mothers of twins out in public? It's like asking for yourself to be randomly baker acted because you saw a person with twins and went temporarily insane.

Why on earth would you say you would take your own life if you had twins?
That is intense, hardcore, over-the-top CRAZY!

Think about it, when we go out in public and see a Mothers with a really outrageously misbehaving child do you go up to her and say....

"Hey is your kid having a FIT? (stressed mother says YES) Oh well I'd kill myself if my kid did that".

Do you ever go up to a random mother that either:

obviously looks like she is broke, dirty, lives on welfare in a trailer
has a lot of kids (not multiples)
has a misbehaving child
wears non-matching clothes on her kid
buys too much junk food
drives a gas guzzler
has a disabled child
is wearing white after labor day (hehe)
shops (a huge shopping trip) with her kid at midnight in wal-mart
has any random appalling (TO YOU) quality

(not stating that these are bad or appalling qualities or facts, just that they could be to any random person)

and say: I'd kill myself if.... (insert any of above statements here)

HECK NO!!! Who does that????? That would be terrible!! Not to mention rude, insensitive, unnecessary, and in some cases quite cruel!

Why do they make that statement and other statements though?
Do they hate children, even their own secretly? Do they really think multiples are such a bad thing? Are they secretly jealous? Are they batsh*t crazy?

What on earth makes people think they can just walk up to or past a mother of multiples and say such an outlandish statement to them?

Do we have a quality that makes them feel really comfortable around us?
Are we one of those people you can just say anything to?
Are we makeshift psychologists?

I know that when people see a set of multiples, they get excited in one way or another and want to let you know that they are indeed excited. I get that.

It's like seeing a random woman in the store with a great pair of earrings or a really amazing sweater, you just have to let her know how you feel about her earrings or sweater!

However, why all the negativity about multiples? What makes people think that it is not only appropriate, but a good idea as well to make random negative comments to mothers of multiples? What happens when those multiples are of age to understand or at least partially understand those negative statements?

It happens! I have recently read on a few different blogs that mothers with multiples ages 3-12 have had comments made to them right in front of their children. Their children, who are multiples and quite capable or understanding those statements.

It hurts their feelings! It confuses them! It upsets them!!

It has to stop!!!

People really need to shut their mouths and look the other way, if they feel strongly compelled to make a negative statement about multiples they see in public.

You never know whose feelings you are going to hurt.

I hope that one day in the near future through the magic of books, magazines, newspapers, television, and the internet, people wise up!

What happened to treating strangers with respect and kindness?

Maybe someday. :)

About you - I am currently at home, going to be going back to school for medical billing, which I am so excited about! I love photography and then scrapbooking those memories as well. I like reading, riding bikes with the kids, camping, the beach, watchin movies. I have fun doing work for the school, my local twins club, the Northern CA twins club and National. I love meeting new moms that "get me" and having a good time with them.

About your Multiples: the kids are in kindergarten this year. They were split up (not by my choice, we actually were not asked and the other 2 sets in Kinder were seperated as well) The good thing is, they have GREAT teachers that are team teaching, so there are 50 kids that we get to know this year. They are in the Dual Immersion program, which is english 2 days, spanish the other 2 and half/half on Friday. They love learning spanish and are doing rally well at it! Conner is sweet and loving and a BIG help to me. He likes to be with his cousins and play video games and be outside. Ashley is FUN and playful, with a princess side. She loves to clean and will literally not go to bed if her room is not clean and her bed not made with all the animals in a row. UGH! She is just starting Girl Scouts and is looking to have so much fun with that!

favorite items for multiples: Love the co-sleeper, it was great to us for the 1st 6 months! Love to get new "matchy" shirts for them to wear.

favorite toys for multiples: Right now, we love the Wii and the DS ssytems. They are so good with them and I was not expecting that! Legos are a good friend right now too. pink and purple for her and all the other "boy" colors for them.

advice for other moms of multiples: Thankfully take that help. My first shopping outing was HARD and the kids both cried and were hungry. A very nice mom in arters sat next to me and said to not let other people make you feel bad about anythin. Feed those babies and realize this is not the 1st or the last crying child people will hear and it is ok. Also, you get really good at just nicely taking the silly questions, answer them as nicely as you can and walk away. Not everyone "gets it" until they are around or have their own multiples and once you understand that, it makes it a little easier to tolerate.

boy was that exhausting....

Today, my awesome friend Lori and I met at the mall in the late morning...because the kids all needed to get out of the house and it was a bit cold outside.

We agreed I would bring along the choo choo wagon . Only the plan was not very well thought out. oops.

We decided to eat in the food court and walk around for some light exercise. It turned into a lot of hardcore exercise.

First off I had this brilliant idea to meet at one of the lower level parking lot areas. RED ALERT RED ALERT, uhhh the mall elevator can not hold a choo choo wagon with 4 carts. Choo choo was too long. We were pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place.

So we went outside of the mall and walked up some steep areas in the parking lot with my twins and her daughter in the choo choo. OUCH!!

We eventually made it to the food court, but wow next time we will bring just 3 carts.

WAIT......no way that does not need to happen....why?

Because my other awesome friend Theresa informed me that there is an actual freight sized elevator inside Macys. Well, at least we know for next time.

It was a bit stressful and strenuous at times but we did get out and get some exercise...
So I guess mission accomplished but with a few repercussions. Passes 2 tylenol to Lori (hope you are not too sore in the morning) :)

By the way, stay tuned for a REALLY really cool update about a product I happened to find online that is custom made for the choo choo wagon!!!!
